.Com Price Increase in September 2022- How To Save Money?

The wholesale cost to register, transfer, and renew .Com domain names will increase(again) by 7% on September 1, 2022, from $8.39 to $8.97 ($9.13 with an ICANN fee of $0.18). And the Domain Registrars will add their markup to cover payment processing fees, technology, other overhead, and profits. Finally, you can’t pay $9.13 for a .Com – It surely should be higher than that. So, how can you save money from the change in prices of .com this time and in the future? Let’s address this together!

.COM Domain Prices Will Increase Every Year

That is not new news. I just wanted to highlight this again. Due to an ICANN decision in 2020 (ICANN is a non-profit organization responsible for coordinating domain names with the US government and worldwide) allows Verisign (the owner of .COM TLD) to increase the wholesale price of .com domain names by 7% every year for four years, with a two-year break, indefinitely.

That means:

  1. Verisign can increase .com domain wholesale prices by 7% each year in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023
  2. Then, freeze the prices in the two years (2024-2025)
  3. Then, increase prices again by 7% annually in 2026-2029
  4. […]
  5. […]
  6. […]

⇒ After the two-year period, the cycle begins again, indefinitely.

Let’s see, the wholesale price of the .com domain in ranges from 2020 to 2029 would be like this:

2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 2027 2028 2029
.COM Fee $7.85 $8.40 $8.99 $9.62 $10.29 $10.29 $10.29 $11.01 $11.78 $12.61 $13.49

If the cycle does not change, the wholesale prices for .com will hike over 70% from 2019 to 2029, increasing from $7.85 to $13.49 (+5.64). It still does not include the profits and extra fees at the registrars, and the final cost would be assuredly higher.

Now, the question is, how to protect your money from the changes in domain prices? And how to save your money on your domain names?
